该学科现有2个二级学科博士点，1个一级学科硕士点，6个二级学科硕士点，1个公共卫生专业硕士学位（MPH）授予点，3个山西省重点建设学科。2004年被山西省评为“品牌专业”。现有9个三级学科，涵盖了24个研究方向，15名学术带头人，其中教授、副教授31人，占教师总数的50.0%。35岁以下青年教师31人，占教师总数的50.0%。硕士及以上学历教师比例达90.3%。
近年来，该学科获得科研成果一等奖11项，二等奖10项，三等奖4项，其它奖2项；获得6项国家专利；在各类学术刊物上发表学术论文638篇，其中被SCI、EI、ISTP收录达24篇；主编一套预防医学专业系列教材（共8本），其中2本为国家“十五”规划教材，4本为国家“十一五”规划教材；一直为卫生部规划教材参编单位。牛侨教授、郑建中教授和李青山教授被评为山西省教学名师。目前承担的科研项目：国家自然科学基金项目15项（13项主持），973子课题1项，部委级课题8项，国际合作课题2项，省级课题75项，省级以下课题38项，合计139项，累计到位经费达767.46万元。该学科于2002年在太原成功地主办了“职业与环境因素对免疫和神经系统影响”国际学术研讨会。截至2007年该学科招收和培养博士研究生6届35人，硕士研究生28届达400余人。
In the public health and preventive medicine discipline inSchoolofPublic Health, there are 2 doctorate degree conferred sub- disciplines, 1 master’s degree conferred discipline, 6 master degree conferred sub- disciplines, 1 Master of Public Health (MPH) degree conferred discipline. 3 master degree conferred sub- disciplines, out of the six, are Shanxi Provincial key construction disciplines. There are 31 professors and associate professors, accounting for 50.0% of the all the teachers. Out of them, there are 15 senior academic experts. 90.3% of the teachers own PhD or Master degrees, and 31 young teachers are below 35 years old, accounting for 50.0% of the teachers. In recent years, the discipline has obtained great achievements in 34 research projects, and 32 of them received awards from or above provincial authorities. Among the awards, 1 item was awarded from state government, and other items from the provincial government. 6 item of national patent were awarded too. The teachers in our school have published 638 papers in the academic journals, 24 of which were cited by SCI, EI and ISTP. Over 11 kinds of textbooks and monograph books were compiled and published. The professors of the school have chiefly compiled two“the National 10th Five-Year Plan”textbooks, four“the National 11th Five-Year Plan”textbooks and 3 textbooks planned by the Ministry of Public Health.
Professor Niu Qiao, Professor Zheng Jianzhong, Professor Qu Chengyi and Professor Li Qingshan were awarded as“Shanxi Provincial famous teacher”, Professor Niu Qiao was awarded as Shanxi Provincial outstanding supervisor for postgraduates.
We are undertaking 139 scientific research projects at present, including 15 National Natural Sciences Foundation projects, one 973 project, 8 ministry-level projects, 2 international cooperation projects, 75 provincial level projects and 38 other projects. The total funds amount to￥7,674,600. This discipline recruited 35 Ph D. candidates and 400 master degree candidates up to 2007.
